In short
- Choose a narrow audience and theme first; on Etsy, "anxiety relief coloring book" had 3,887 listings against 384,099 for "coloring book" in our measurement.
- Keep one line weight, closed shapes and no grey shading across every page.
- KDP requires at least 24 pages for black-and-white paperbacks; blank backs help reach it and stop marker bleed-through.
- Bleed adds 0.125 in to the width and 0.25 in to the height; outside margins with bleed must be at least 0.375 in.
- Spine width grows with page count; thin books cannot carry spine text.
- Declare AI-generated pages and covers on KDP, and disclose AI in the Etsy description.
On this page
To make a coloring book you can sell, you need a theme narrow enough to find buyers, 20 to 40 pages of consistent line art, an interior PDF that meets the printer's rules, and a cover. The same pages can be sold twice: as a paperback through Amazon KDP and as a printable PDF on Etsy. The two need different files, and that difference is where most first books run into trouble.
This guide covers the theme, the pages, KDP's technical rules for the interior and cover, AI disclosure, and what coloring books sell for on Etsy.
Where first coloring books go wrong
Three problems account for most rejected or badly reviewed coloring books.
Inconsistent pages. A book where page 3 is thick-lined and simple and page 4 is dense and detailed feels like a random collection. Buyers notice, especially parents choosing for a specific age.
Art that runs into the trim. KDP trims the printed sheet, and anything placed too close to the edge can be cut off.
Marker bleed-through. Coloring books printed double-sided let markers soak through onto the next drawing. Many sellers leave the back of every page blank for that reason, which also doubles the page count.
Get these right before you worry about the cover.
Step 1: Pick an audience and a narrow theme
"Animals" is not a theme; "Cozy woodland animals for ages 4–6" is. The audience decides the line weight and detail: thick outlines and large shapes for preschoolers, fine detail and patterns for adults.
On Etsy, the narrower searches are much less crowded. We measured these with Optimsy's Goldmine, which reads Etsy's live search results. The listing count is Etsy's own number; the other figures come from the top 100 results Etsy ranked.
"coloring book" (17 Oct 2026): 384,099 listings, median price $7.75, 57 of the top 100 digital.
"kids coloring book" (17 Oct 2026): 219,594 listings, median price $4.35, 45 of the top 100 listed in the last 30 days.
"adult coloring book" (17 Oct 2026): 151,380 listings, median price $6.54.
"bold and easy coloring book" (10 Oct 2026): 21,209 listings, median price $3.99.
"anxiety relief coloring book" (4 Nov 2026): 3,887 listings, median price $4.15.
The gap between 384,099 and 3,887 is the point. A specific need ("anxiety relief", "bold and easy", a holiday, a hobby) puts you in a much smaller pool. Our guide to narrowing a saturated niche goes deeper on choosing the angle.
Step 2: Make the pages
Whatever you use to draw, hold these constant across the whole book:
One line weight for outlines, chosen for the age group.
Closed shapes. Every area a child is meant to colour should be enclosed, so colour does not "leak" into the next area.
No grey fill or shading. Coloring pages are black lines on white. Grey areas print muddy and leave nothing to colour.
A safe margin. Keep important lines well inside the page edge.
Twenty to thirty drawings is a common size for a first book. With a blank back behind each page, 20 drawings already gives you a 40-page interior.
Step 3: Build the KDP interior PDF
Amazon KDP publishes exact rules for paperbacks. The ones that matter most for coloring books:
Minimum page count: 24 pages for black ink on white paper (72 for standard colour).
Trim size: 8.5 × 11 in is the classic coloring book size. KDP lists it among its large trim sizes, alongside smaller options such as 8 × 10 in.
Bleed: if your art runs to the edge of the page, the PDF page must be 0.125 in wider and 0.25 in taller than the trim size, and outside margins must be at least 0.375 in.
Gutter: for 24–150 pages, the inside margin must be at least 0.375 in.
Most coloring pages do not need full bleed, because the drawing sits inside a white margin. Use bleed only when a border or background runs to the edge. Before you publish, check every page in KDP's previewer and order a printed proof copy; lines that look crisp on screen can print softer at full size.
Step 4: Make the cover
The KDP paperback cover is a single file: back cover, spine and front cover side by side, plus bleed around the outside. Its width depends on your page count, because the spine gets thicker with every sheet.
On white paper, KDP's spine formula works out to about 0.002252 in per page. A 40-page interior has a spine of roughly 0.09 in, too thin for text; spine text is generally only possible from about 80 pages. Optimsy's free KDP Cover Calculator does this maths for your trim size, paper and page count and gives you a template with the spine, safe zones and barcode area marked.
Step 5: Disclose AI if you used it
If any of your pages or your cover were created by an AI tool, KDP asks you to declare it as AI-generated content when you publish, even if you edited the result afterwards. Content you made yourself and only refined with AI counts as AI-assisted and does not need the declaration. Etsy has a similar rule: items created with AI must say so in the listing description.
Disclosure does not stop the book from selling. Hiding it can get the book removed.
Step 6: Sell the same book on Etsy
Etsy buyers download and print at home, so they want a PDF sized for home printers (Letter or A4) rather than your KDP file with bleed. Add a cover image, two or three preview pages and a clear count: "30 pages, PDF, US Letter and A4". Etsy allows up to five files per digital listing, each up to 20MB.
Doing it faster with Coloring Book
Optimsy's Coloring Book tool is built around the consistency problem. You write a theme, choose the audience (preschool, kids, teens or adults), a difficulty level and a cover style, and it draws up to 20 pages and a titled cover together, in one line style.
For KDP, it exports an interior PDF at 8.5 × 11, 8 × 10 or 6 × 9 in, with 0.125 in bleed and a blank back after each page switched on by default, and optional page numbers. For Etsy, it builds a pack with a print-ready PDF, the cover image, listing mockups and listing text. It does not make the wraparound KDP cover; use the free KDP Cover Calculator for that.
Each page and the cover cost 5 credits, so a 20-page book with a cover is 105 credits.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pages should a KDP coloring book have?
KDP's minimum for a black-and-white paperback is 24 pages. Many coloring books use 20 to 50 drawings with a blank back behind each, which puts the interior at 40 to 100 pages.
What size is a standard coloring book on KDP?
8.5 × 11 in is the most common coloring book size. KDP also offers smaller trims such as 8 × 10 in, which some sellers use for children's books.
Do I need bleed for a coloring book?
Only if your art or a border runs to the edge of the page. If every drawing sits inside a white margin, you can publish without bleed, which keeps the setup simpler.
Can I sell AI-generated coloring books on Amazon KDP?
Yes, but you must declare AI-generated text and images when you publish or republish. You are also responsible for making sure the pages do not copy existing characters, artwork or trademarks.
