In short
- A seamless pattern is a tile whose opposite edges continue into each other; judge it by a 2×2 repeat, never a single tile.
- The offset method (shift by half, fill the cross, shift back) works in any editor.
- 3600 × 3600 px is 12 × 12 inches at 300 DPI for digital paper, and 24 inches at Spoonflower's 150 DPI.
- Etsy allows five files of up to 20MB each on a digital listing; a JPEG master usually fits where a PNG may not.
- On Etsy, "seamless pattern" listings had a median price of $4.50 in our measurement, so bundling and narrow themes matter more than single tiles.
On this page
A seamless pattern is a square tile whose left edge continues into its right edge and whose top continues into its bottom, so it can repeat across fabric, wrapping paper or a phone case with no visible line. Making one comes down to three things: a motif layout that crosses the tile edges on purpose, a check that those edges really match, and a file sized for where it will be printed.
This guide walks through all three, then looks at what repeat patterns actually sell for, using measurements of live Etsy search results.
Why most first patterns show a seam
The seam is the line where one copy of the tile meets the next. It appears when something stops at the edge of the tile instead of continuing into the next copy: a leaf cut off on the right that never reappears on the left, a background gradient that is darker on one side, or motifs crowded into the middle with empty space at the borders.
You often cannot see the problem in a single tile. It shows up only when you place four copies side by side. A buyer who prints your file on 3 yards of fabric will see it every 12 inches, and that is the kind of flaw that turns into a refund request.
So the working rule is simple: never judge a pattern by one tile. Judge it by a 2×2 or 3×3 repeat.
How to make a seamless pattern, step by step
The method below works in any editor that can move layers by an exact number of pixels (Photoshop, Affinity, Procreate, Illustrator, even free tools like Photopea).
Start with a square canvas. Square tiles are the easiest to repeat and the standard for digital paper. 3600 × 3600 px is a common working size because it prints at 12 × 12 inches at 300 DPI.
Place your main motifs in the middle. Leave the edges empty for now.
Offset the tile by half its size. Move the whole design 1800 px right and 1800 px down, wrapping around. What was at the edges is now in the centre, and your four former edges now meet in a cross through the middle.
Fill the cross. Add motifs over the visible joins, letting them overlap the lines. This is the step that makes the edges continuous.
Offset back and test the repeat. Fill a larger canvas with the tile and look for stripes, gaps, or the same motif lining up in obvious rows.
Check the background. A flat colour or a texture that is even across the whole tile repeats cleanly. A gradient almost never does.
Half-drop and brick repeats
A straight "block" repeat lines copies up in a grid. A half-drop repeat shifts every other column down by half a tile, and a brick repeat does the same with rows. Both hide the grid better, which is why many fabric designers prefer them. If you sell on a print-on-demand site, check which repeat types it lets the buyer choose before you design for one.
Sizing the file: digital paper, fabric and print-on-demand
The same tile can be sold in several places, but each one reads the file differently.
Digital paper on Etsy. Sellers usually deliver 12 × 12 inch sheets at 300 DPI, which is 3600 × 3600 px. Etsy lets you attach up to five files to a digital listing, with a maximum of 20MB per file, so a full-resolution PNG can be too large. A high-quality JPEG of the same tile is usually a fraction of the size.
Spoonflower. Spoonflower accepts JPG or PNG, prints at 150 DPI and limits uploads to 40MB. Because it prints at 150 DPI, a 3600 px tile repeats at 24 inches there, not 12. If you want a smaller repeat, scale it down in Spoonflower's design tool rather than re-exporting at a lower pixel count.
Other print-on-demand sites. Each publishes its own pixel and DPI rules. Read them before you export, and keep your master file at the highest size you can work with so you can resize down, never up.
A practical habit: keep one master tile, and export a separate file for each destination. Never upscale a small tile to fit a large product. The edges may still match, but the motifs will print soft.
What seamless patterns sell for on Etsy
We measured these searches with Optimsy's Goldmine, which reads Etsy's live search results. The listing count is Etsy's own number for the search; the other figures come from the top 100 results Etsy ranked for it.
"seamless pattern" (measured 3 Nov 2026): 497,313 active listings. 98 of the top 100 were digital downloads. Median price $4.50, with most between $2 and $8. 24 of the 100 were listed in the last 30 days.
"kids seamless pattern" (4 Nov 2026): 258,421 listings, median price $6.00, and only 4 of the top 100 were new in the last 30 days.
"surface pattern" (16 Oct 2026): 367,142 listings, median price $5.88.
"digital paper" (1 Nov 2026): 6,744,336 listings, median price $4.29.
Two things stand out. First, this is a low-price category: a single tile rarely sells for much, so sellers bundle. Second, the broad terms are crowded, but narrower ones behave differently. "kids seamless pattern" had a higher median price and far fewer new listings at the top than the general term, which suggests the page-one spots there are held by established shops rather than being refreshed constantly.
That second point is the real lesson: pick a narrow theme and a buyer (a quilter, a scrapbooker, a sublimation printer) before you pick colours. Our guide to validating a niche before you make anything covers how to read these numbers for your own idea.
Packaging a pattern so it sells
A buyer paying $4 to $8 wants to understand the file at a glance.
Show the repeat, not the tile. Your cover image should show the pattern applied to something, or at least repeated several times, so the buyer can see it is seamless.
State the size and DPI in the title or first line, for example "12 × 12 in, 300 DPI". Digital paper buyers search and filter by it.
Say what is in the download: how many files, what format, and whether colourways are included.
Be clear about use. Tell buyers whether they may use the pattern on products they sell. If you used AI to create the design, Etsy's house rules require you to say so in the listing description. (Etsy's October 2026 ban on AI-generated patterns covers instructional patterns such as knitting or sewing patterns; a surface design is artwork, but check Etsy's AI creations policy for your exact product.)
Doing it faster with Pattern Studio
If you want to skip the manual offset-and-patch work, Optimsy's Pattern Studio generates the tile for you. You describe the pattern, pick one of eight styles (floral, geometric, watercolor, minimalist, abstract, vintage, bohemian or Memphis), add a colour palette or a reference image, and get up to four variations per run.
Each result goes through an automatic edge check: if the left and right edges, the top and bottom edges or the corners do not match, the tile is rejected and regenerated. You can export a 3600 × 3600 px, 300 DPI print file, saved as a JPEG that stays under Etsy's 20MB limit, and add a set of five listing mockups (fabric, packaging, wall art and lifestyle scenes) plus a title, description and 13 tags.
It is not a replacement for taste. You still choose the theme, reject the variations that look generic, and decide how to bundle them. It removes the part of the job that is pure mechanics.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size should a seamless pattern be?
For digital paper, 3600 × 3600 px at 300 DPI (12 × 12 inches) is the common standard. For fabric printing on Spoonflower, the same file repeats at 24 inches because Spoonflower prints at 150 DPI. Keep your master as large as you can work with and export smaller versions for each use.
How do I check if my pattern is truly seamless?
Fill a larger canvas with four or nine copies of the tile and look at the joins at full zoom. Watch for cut-off motifs, colour shifts at the edges, and empty stripes where the borders meet.
Can I sell seamless patterns made with AI on Etsy?
Etsy allows items created with the help of AI, but its house rules require you to disclose that in the listing description. You are also responsible for making sure the design does not copy someone else's artwork, characters or trademarks.
Should I sell single patterns or bundles?
In our measurement, the median price for "seamless pattern" on Etsy was $4.50 and "digital paper" was $4.29, so single tiles compete on a low price. Bundles of coordinated colourways or themed sets let you charge more per sale for roughly the same design effort.
