Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is a 4×6 at 300 DPI?

1,200 × 1,800 pixels in portrait, 1,800 × 1,200 in landscape. At 200 DPI it is 800 × 1,200 and at 150 DPI 600 × 900. Most photo labs print 4×6 at 300 DPI, so a smaller file gets upscaled by the lab and loses sharpness.

Is 4×6 the same ratio as 8×12 and 24×36?

Yes. 4×6, 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30 and 24×36 are all 2:3. One 2:3 file prints every one of them without a crop, and a 24×36 master at 7,200 × 10,800 pixels covers the small sizes at well above 300 DPI.

Will a 4×6 file print at 5×7?

Only with a crop. 5×7 is wider than 2:3, so filling a 5×7 with a 4×6 file trims about 7% of the image from the top and bottom. If you sell both sizes, export a separate 5×7 file or keep the important details away from the edges.
